ISTEC (currently SUSTEC) has developed a highly sensitive geomagnetic observation system in collaboration with Tokyo Metropolitan University, Tohoku University, and Terra Technica Co., Ltd. The Earthquake Early Warning currently being conducted detects a small pitching motion (p wave) that is transmitted before a strong rolling motion (s wave) with a seismograph and issues an alarm before the large shaking. The developed device measures geomagnetic changes with high sensitivity. Since it detects electromagnetic waves, it can detect the occurrence of an earthquake at the speed of light. Measurement data is available in real time via the web.
